In this 3-day workshop, you'll learn how to make your own vessels on the pottery wheel – and afterwards, how to use a kenzan (flower frog) to create stylish flower arrangements.
Day 1 & 2 – Pottery Wheel
Day 1: You'll learn how to center clay and throw first shapes like bowls or cylinders. If you like, you can also make a two-part vessel, which you'll assemble on day two.
Day 2: Once your pieces have dried for a day, you'll bring them into their final form – for example, trimming a foot ring into the base and smoothing the surfaces. If you made a two-part vessel the day before, you'll assemble it now.
Once your pieces are fully dried, glazed, and fired by us, the kenzan workshop follows – this part is led by Alina from soil.
Day 3 – Ikebana
In this part of the workshop, Alina from soil will introduce you to mindful flower arranging. The creative approach is inspired by ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. You'll arrange flowers in the very vessels you made on the wheel – giving you a truly personal foundation for your arrangement.
- Focus on form and structure: Rather than creating lush, full bouquets, Alina draws out the natural character of each individual flower. She'll show you how to create distinctive arrangements through deliberate lines and reduction.
- Craft and technique: The course combines practice and theory. Alina will share background knowledge on materials and tools, and give you a brief introduction to the origins of ikebana. There's still plenty of room to try out your own ideas – there's no right or wrong here, you're simply meant to have a good time.
Notes:
*All materials and tools are provided, no prior experience needed. You'll take your finished arrangement home, vessel and kenzan included.
*It is best to wear clothes and shoes that can get dirty.
*During the Kenzan workshop, we'll serve a selection of tea (hot & cold) and light snacks.
